On Friday, Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, stating, “I love King Charles,” while linking to an article referencing the report from the Daily Mail. The report claimed that the British monarch would propose the idea during Trump’s anticipated second state visit to the United Kingdom. Trump enthusiastically added, “Sounds good to me!”
Speculation Grows Around U.S. Commonwealth Membership
The Daily Mail report suggested that discussions about the U.S. joining the Commonwealth first surfaced during Trump’s initial term. With trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada escalating, the proposal aims to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.
A source from the Royal Commonwealth Society told the publication, “This is being discussed at the highest levels. It would be a significant move symbolizing the deep bond between Britain and the U.S.”
Understanding the British Commonwealth
Established in 1926, the British Commonwealth comprises 56 nations, including Canada and Australia, which are many former British colonies. Membership remains voluntary, and the reigning British monarch serves as the symbolic head of the organization. Queen Elizabeth II prioritized maintaining the Commonwealth throughout her reign, ensuring its continued significance globally.
While the U.S. was once part of the British Empire before gaining independence in 1776, India became the first country to retain Commonwealth membership after achieving independence in 1947.

Trump’s rare second state visit to the UK later this year will include a meeting with King Charles III. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer formally presented the invitation to Trump during their recent meeting in the Oval Office.
During the discussion, Starmer emphasized the importance of the visit, stating, “I think this symbolizes the strength of the relationship between our nations. His Majesty the King wants to make this visit even more memorable than the last.”
Trump responded positively, saying, “The answer is yes. On behalf of our wonderful First Lady Melania and myself, we look forward to being there, honoring the King, and celebrating your fantastic country.”
